Analysis of a thriller opening
The thriller clip opening I will analysing is “ Déjà Vu” . It starts with “distance” sounding music and slowed down movements of women, while the men in sailor suits drive in. The music starts playing and its starts of sad music, as the names come on the screen the movement in the scene gets frozen . A small to medium sized white font comes up surrounded by a box, the white is the same a the sailor suits that the men are wearing. This is in a busy urban seaside town setting. They use tracking, medium shots and follow the men as the all get onthe boat, this makes the viewer wonder why they are getting on this boat. Then an establishing shot of the sea and the port showing the settings as the sad music is still playing. The music gets faster and so does the camera movement as all the men rush to get on their boat. Everyone seems very happy to get on this boat maybe to happy? This causes a lot of wondering and suspense there are various shots of the men getting on the boat. The first digetic dialogue is when the captain of the boat says “ can’t believe there on time for the party” .This is big build up for a party meaning the audience knows something is going to happen soon because of the music. As the boats leaves the port a fake plateau is used, this is when a doll is dropped and the audiences first perception is that a baby is being dropped over the edge. This is shown as a bad moment, a faded scream is used. Then happy music is played to make the audience think nothing else is going to happen while the suspense builds up to something else .Parallel editing is used now showing two situations at once, a man looking around the cars and the party builds a lot of suspense. A sound bridge is used to show the digenetic music coming from the car radio. A mid shot is used to show the boat leaving. It switches from scene to scene as it lets the audience know something else is going to happen but we don’t know what is going to happen. The editing gets fast as it shows the happy scene and the man realising there’s a bomb in the car. Pyrotechnics and CGI is used for the explosion of the boat.
