Preliminary Match Cut
Dionne, Sammie & Myself decided to base our Preliminary Match Cut on Sammie walking into 'detention'. It begins with a close-up on the feet as she walks up the stairs and then a shot from in front of her. This took a while to film as we had to ensure continuity was there so consistency of the clip was clear.
The clip also varies with shots including, point-of-view shots, over-the-shoulder shots, shot-reverse-shot between Sammie & my conversation and a mid-close up shot to establish both of us in the shot.
It took just under the 3-hour session to film our clip, and only about 1-2 hours of editing as we had filmed each clip in order to editing would only involve transitions, match-cuts and sound.
Though the clip is quite short, attempting to stick to the story board can make it difficult to follow.
our practise match cut exersize
This was our first practise of a match cut. Our task was to film any situration as long as it included a match cut, this was our first exersize where we made a story bored and had to think of our own plans and actully film it. This gave us the first experience of making a story board and seeing how hard it is to fill up the shots. we had to do about 20shots, this sounded easy but as we tried to complete this task we relised how hard this was. This was useful because it gave us a chance to see how hard it was and how much thought our final product will need and hard work it will take.
This sequence started off with me, the main charactor, walking up the stairs its shows the back of me walking up. Then it goes to my point of view shot, looking out the glass to see the view. Then this is were the match cut was shown, as there was various shots as i go to reach for the door. This took many shots and i relised it was harder than i thought it was, espically when it came to editing as it didnt run as smooth as it could, so a cross disove was needed. Finally i walk into a room, where another charactor, christel was sitting we manage to do a shot-reverse-shot of me and christel talking. Trying to keep the camera on the correct side, following the 180 degree rule was hard and we kept messing it up as we relised after.when filming the final project, we will have to take into consideration that time is vital. This is because by the time the deadline came, we manage to do titles but the soundtrack was one beat played all the way through. This wouldnt be good enough for the final project to get full marks.
This was our first attemp of filming, we had to see how filming thriller works. This was because our overall genre has to be a thiller. We had a choice between a thrilling game of cards or a newspaper read. which we had to make it thrilling as possible. We choice a thiller newspaper read. We had to think about particular shots, camera movements and angles we could use to make this look as creapping, thrilling and instresting as possible. We chose; long shots, over the sholder shot, close ups, point of view shot, tracking and shakey hand movements. Which all lead to the overall sequence to be thrillering and built up suspense. To make it relistic as possible was a hard task, a thriller is a hard concept to create through camera, as there are many different ways in which you can protray it, we chose the typical sequence of someone being followed. This is the whole goods vs bad sub genre.

Newspaper Thriller Storyboard
KEY: LS - Long Shot, WS - Wide Shot, CU - Close Up, ECU - Extreme Close Up, MS - Meduim Shot OSS - Over-The-Shoulder Shot, SRS - Shot-Reverse-Shot, POV - Point Of View Shot
This is a MS of myself walking with the newspaper, we used tracking to show my movements from the entrance of the park, all the way to where i sat down on a bench
Picture 3In this image, the shot is shown as a OSS so the audience have an idea of what i am seeing.. this image puts the audience in the same position as myself. To get from picture 2, to this picture, we had to cut-play-cut so that it would run smoothly. When we edited this, we had to allow continuity to take place.
This picture is very similar to picuure 2 as MS and tracking are also used here, however, in this clip, I am reading the newspaper
LS was used in this image so the audience are able to see I am simply sitting on a bench, reading the newspaper in the park. At this point, tension is not being built up.
This image was of a WS from behind the bushes; where tension begins. When editing, this shot was a problem because from picture 5 to this picture, the position of the newspaper had changed so we had not beared in mind 'continuity', however, we used a "dissolve" transition to show a change in time.
In this image, I am shown a CU reading the newspaper. To get from picture 6 to this picture, instead of using 'zoom-in', we cut the tape and replayed from a closer postition. The point of this CU shot was to get the 'concerned'/'shocked' expression so the audience are aware something is to occur.
In this image, we used ECU so the audience can focus on the newspaper, this also gave us the oppurtunity to allow Alima, to appear without behind me without the acknowledgement of the audience.
Here we used a LS so the audience can see the appearance of Alima. I am "unaware" of her being there, so it builds up excitement for the audience.
This is an OSS so the audience sewe that Alima is seeing. During this shot, I realise the presence of Alima and I turn around, after spotting her...
..and begin to walk away from Alima towards another bench as I am aware of her creepiness.
Picture 13This image is of a LS of me jogging away from Alima. Dionne attempted to get my movements by shaking the camera whilst I ran so the audience would get an idea of how I felt. It is obvious that Alima is left behind, but what is to come, also builds tension for the audience.
This is a POV so the audience can be in the position of me running, they to are experiencing what I am going through which builds up the anticipation
This image is of me showing relief that I have gotten away from Alima, this is a CU to show my expression of content, which also relaxes the audience.. for now!
In this MC shot and POV shot, Alima jumps out at me which puts the audience in a position of wonder.. "How Did Alima Get There?"
Filming this shot was very simple, yet we had to use SRS numerous of times to show my reaction.
Picture 17
ECU was used to portray shock from how Alima appeared after I thought I had ran away from her. This builds tension for the audience as it leaves them with a cliffhanger.. "What Is To Happen From Here?"

Final Edit of Livetype & Sound Filming Practice
Alima, Dionne, Sammie & my task was to create a thriller clip based on a person reading a newspaper.
Initially, we were given the choice to create a thrilling atmosphere between individuals playing cards and idea's suddenly emerged into my head, however, I thought a more challenging task would determine whether we are capable of handling filming and editing for any situation.
When it came to creating our storyboard, it was not easy at all. Or minimum set aim was at least 16 shots, yet after at least 5, we had ran out of ideas. So to add more tension and shots, we included different camera shots which would help tell our thrilling clip from different angles.
After allocating roles, we took the camera outside into the park next to the college to shoot our video. As easy as it seemed from the basic drawings of our storyboard, filiming at first was just as hard as coming up with the nature of our clip. After getting used to using the camera, we began filming yet realised some of the clips we wanted to use from our storyboard was impossible due to the limited time of 45mintues to film and also the weather conditions.
We explored different camera shots such as long and wide shots, over-the-shoulder shots as well as point of view shows and many editing such as tracking, panning and blurring.
Over time, filming became frustrating for each of us, as conditions were cold and having to repeat unsuccesfull shots determined whether we'd have a long enough shot to edit.
However, we finally came up with a thrilling clip for a newspaper, yet the problems were still left to unfold...
When it came to editing, we realised that errors that we thought we could have 'magically' fix with the editing program were only possible with re-filming them. 'Continuity' was the main error, which we have taken into account to make sure we are aware of it when we come to producing our final Thriller clip. There is a shot of when i am shown at an over-the-shoulder shot of me reading the newspaper up high, however, the shot changes into a long shot with the camera from behind the bushes, yet the newspaper is no longer up high. To resovle this problem, Sammie & I decided to use a transition to show "time had passed".
Other errors included the appearance of props in our shots.. this, unlike the newspaper, is unable to be edited out, so we shall bear this in mind to keep all props out of the way.
Unfortunately, as we used a public area, we had to re-film many shots as careless people got into the shots, therefore, we will consider a better location for our final Thriller clip.
Our group did not get to import title sequences or soundtracks into our clip, yet we were able to mute out any sounds which were within the clip i.e, unwanted dialogue, and the win blowing, by locking it on the program and deleting it. Hopefully, we will have time to come back to editing the clip to add in a soundtrack.
The experience of filmig revealed that it is not as easy as 'A-B-C', yet it takes a lot of concentration, team work and dedication - one slip up is very costly! However, i did enjoy the experience of filming and starring in the clip, yet we can learn a lot from this first and only clip!
News & Current Affairs Events
There are many shots within the clip, for example at 0:27-0:29, when the camera shakes along with the movement of the person filming which draws the audience in to the clip. They too feel as nervous as the people within the clip feel and they are put in an uncomfortable position as the camera uncontrollably shakes. At 0:53-1:01, kidnapped soldiers people are shown at a close up which allows the audience to have empathy but also creates questions as to 'what is going on?'
"BBC News Severe Weather Storms Batter UK"
Strangely enough, this too can create tension. Throughout the short 2minute clip, each presenter warn the audience of the severe weather conditions which has left people unable to leave their homes, and those already out, will have troubles reaching wanted destinations. This creates tension as it leaves the audience feeling some what 'trapped' in the surroundings there are in. The variables - in this case the weather - is a natural occurring event, so escaping the situation or stopping it is impossible! and so the audience find themselves unable to escape.
The clip, from 0:50-0:59 reveals overpowering waves of the sea "attacking" two individuals who are standing on the coastline. It creates tension for the audience as they too feel power-less because they know that if they were in the same situation, they too would get "attacked". There are many shots of abandoned cars which have been driven into trees, buildings and even each other which continues to establish the idea of the audience having no control.
There are close up shots of hugh trees positioned in the middle of the road as drivers attempt to 'swerve' around them which worries the audience of the dangers this can cause - this creates tenion as they question whether, if in the particular situation, would they be able to cope with having to risk their lives to continue of their journey(s).
The art of the title sequence

DAWN OF THE DEAD
The Dawn of the dead title sequence builds up suspense as soon as its shown. the theme is scary/uneasy . this makes us as viewers feel suspicious of whats going to happen next or in the movie. the sequence starts of with a black background and small red writing in the corner . then we get to see a short clip of people after that we see the black background with red writing again. the same thing happens repeatedly. however after the first clip is shown we see images that flash and then the plain background and writing comes back. these images are very gruesome. they consist of blood and gore which are quiet disturbing. after this the name of the film (the title of the film) appears. this writing is much bigger than the writing that was shown before and it is in the center on the screen but its still red and on a black background. the writing blurs out like as if its blood on our television screen. then we see a short clip of soldiers then the writing comes back. the writing shows names of the people within the movie. we see more images and short clips of people getting heart and with this there is a voice over. there is digetic sound of screams. we then see the president being questioned about "the people" and his answer is he does not know. this makes us feel even more scared because we expect the president to know whats going on. we then see people getting shot buy guns and a lot of people getting killed. we see people running for their lives. we also see women and children. we see a clip of the news being recorded and being shown on live television. soon after there is a non-digetic sound of a man singing at the beginning it sounds like he's talking then soon after it turns in a song. we see a ambulance van getting blown up. we see clips of people all around the world. the same thing happens everywhere. This is what builds up the suspense because we know that there is no were to escape. that there is no help for anyone. this is what makes the title sequence very effective. it leaves viewers with a thrill and a suspence of whats going to happen in the film. This is a good tecnnique of bringing viewrs in.

How Is Suspense Created In The Thriller You Watched In Class?

Another example of suspense within the film is when he appears the hotel room to confront the cheating husband. Sy has a gun and the audience is led to believe that he is going to shoot the man and the woman he is cheating with. The shot then goes on to show the man's worried wife and the police who are trying to catch Sy before he does any damage. The scene goes back to the hotel room and we can see that he has not harmed either the man or the woman as we would have believed but he in forcing them to take compromising images, to show the mans wife so she can end the marriage.
Technical Audit Of Bait Tutorial
I found this whole excercise quite enjoyable because everyone had there own idea of what the next scene was and what parts of the clip needed to be cut, making everyone's scenes different. Even though i enjoyed the excercise i also found it quite difficult because once i thought i had got the right sequence there was also another way that seemed right !

Defintions Of Suspense
Suspense can be described as a feeling of uncertainty and anxiety. It is often used to describe an audiences perception in dramatic work. Suspense may be created in situations when there is a lead up to a big event or dramatic moment.

Technical audit of bait tutorial

We got shown some prefilmed clips in which we had to play around with(edit) to make a flowing sequence. We got showed how to use various short cuts on the program which would shorten the editing process. One thing i learn't was pressing `I` on the key board for input and `O` for output. Another useful tool that i used a lot during this editing session was the razer cutting tool, this allowed you to cut from your output and delte particular parts in a scene. I know this tool is going to be a very vital part of my editting process. We learn't how to drag the clips on to the story board and order them. We learn't how to put sound and effects on to the clip this will also be helpful. We all had a set amount of time to order these clips and see who came up with the most flowing sequence, i know this will be very important and helped me alot for editing.
The art of the title sequence
'Se7en' is a thriller film, the titles are senif fonts which look very like a childs handwriting. This shows the creppy genre it is trying to protray. The titles say the producers, stars, and any other people to do with the making of the film. The size of the writing is very small, and there are distrbing pictures in the backgroud for example, a man cutting his fingers and turning pages of a book. The narative in the opening sequence does not make sense when first watching it.The format of the title sequence is font on a plan background, with a bit of nartative, this is why it is so successful compared to other title opening. It manages to draw viewers in beginging. The editing is very quick and theres alot of fast shots and close up used. Which gives the viewer only a quick view of whats going on and gives it a mistorious feel to the film. There is alot of things that appeal to me in the sequence this is, the way the colours are very bold, stand out and really highlights what is going on in the sequence which creates tension and surpense.

thriller sub genres
A thriller film is a film that creates suspense, adventure and tension which can have a good person and a villain.
There are many sub-genres to thriller some of these would include;
Action thrillers-James bond,
Conspiracy thriller-three days of the condor,
Crime thriller-seven
Disaster thriller-the earthquake
Drama thriller-the prestige
Legal thriller-agency
Physiological thriller-the talented Mr. Ripley
Religious thriller-The Da Vinci Code
The thrillers that inspire me at the moment are; action thrillers and physiological thrillers. Action thrillers inspire me because there not only filled with loads of suspense but there filled with action and adventure in a fast entertaining plot.Physiological thrillers because they play with the viewers mind and can be scary as well as filled with suspense which leads to a complicated plot .
Suspense definition.
Suspense is when there’s a feeling of uncertainty of what could happen before a dramatic event. Suspense happens building up to a dramatic event with tension being part of the primary emotion felt as part of the situation. For example when someone is going to get killed in a thriller or horror, music is usually played to show to the viewers that something might happen, this is suspense which leads the viewers to want to watch more and watch on.
Analysis of a thriller opening
The thriller clip opening I will analysing is “ Déjà Vu” . It starts with “distance” sounding music and slowed down movements of women, while the men in sailor suits drive in. The music starts playing and its starts of sad music, as the names come on the screen the movement in the scene gets frozen . A small to medium sized white font comes up surrounded by a box, the white is the same a the sailor suits that the men are wearing. This is in a busy urban seaside town setting. They use tracking, medium shots and follow the men as the all get onthe boat, this makes the viewer wonder why they are getting on this boat. Then an establishing shot of the sea and the port showing the settings as the sad music is still playing. The music gets faster and so does the camera movement as all the men rush to get on their boat. Everyone seems very happy to get on this boat maybe to happy? This causes a lot of wondering and suspense there are various shots of the men getting on the boat. The first digetic dialogue is when the captain of the boat says “ can’t believe there on time for the party” .This is big build up for a party meaning the audience knows something is going to happen soon because of the music. As the boats leaves the port a fake plateau is used, this is when a doll is dropped and the audiences first perception is that a baby is being dropped over the edge. This is shown as a bad moment, a faded scream is used. Then happy music is played to make the audience think nothing else is going to happen while the suspense builds up to something else .Parallel editing is used now showing two situations at once, a man looking around the cars and the party builds a lot of suspense. A sound bridge is used to show the digenetic music coming from the car radio. A mid shot is used to show the boat leaving. It switches from scene to scene as it lets the audience know something else is going to happen but we don’t know what is going to happen. The editing gets fast as it shows the happy scene and the man realising there’s a bomb in the car. Pyrotechnics and CGI is used for the explosion of the boat.
No country for old men
“no country for old men” ( 400 words)
“No country, for old men” is a crime thriller directed, produced and written by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, and distrusted by paramount vantage. Thrillers like to build up situation to the viewers to create tension and suspense thought-out. The scene starts off with opening credits , this is a black screen with written names, there was no music during this. Then the film shows shots of the desert with a voice over, again no music, saying a story about this guy. This created suspense because the story mentions’ about this person and it makes the viewer thing what is going to happen next. The next big build up to suspense is the first kill, this starts off with a shot of a man on a telephone as the man focus, in the background we see a man moving towards him but as he isn’t the man focus we don’t see to pay attention. It slowly zooms into the man on the telephone then the man behind him gets his handcuffs and strangles him this is the first kill of the film. The lack of music in this scene allows the viewers to really focus on the situation and the slowness of the zoom in creates a lot of tension and suspense to what happened next. Lastly another scene that creates a lot of suspense, is a scène where there’s a chase of a dog and the man in the river as they swim along the river not being able to catch each other until one gets out the water, the chase as no music, finally then man gets out of the water and so does the dog then man is trying to get the bullets in his gun the dog is catching up to him then he shoots the dog, as the chasse was so close we did not know what the outcome would be so this created a lot of suspense to the audience, and sadness when the dog is shot.Through out the film, the lack of music is used, still allowing the film to create suspense. Generally music is used to create suspense so this is a tricky technique used, but obviously worked because it was

This is the scene where the dog dies ,
Film font.

Ghost ship (2002)
The font in this film, appeals to me because its medium size, white and clear to see font. The serif fonts suggest that its a serious or scary matter shown in the film. If they would have used sans serif fonts on the cover. It might not have bin taken seriously or might have bin considered a joke which takes away the scary aspect. The colour of the font is white. The title is Ghost ship, the white could be representing the "Ghost's" that are shown in the film. The font is fading into the water, this shows that the film is scary and is to do with a ship.

EXTENSION: Fonts Used By Films Which Appeal To Me

The title is positioned in the center of the image towards the bottom. This demonstrates the importants of the title and also, the dominance of the man shown on the image as the positioning of the title suggests he is 'Dorian Gray'.
Intro To Cameras and Health & Safety Tutorial

The tutorial was beneficial for us students to know how to use the camera, as many may not have been introduced to one.
Technical Audit of Bait Tutorial
Input is used to select where you wanted the edited clip to start, Output is then used to select where the clip should finish. On the program there is a storyboard where all the edited clips, as well as soundtracks and effects, are placed. When the input and output have been selected, it can be dragged to the storyboard and played to view on the canvas.
Individually, we attempted to edit the different clips inorder to make a story which would make sense. Trying to find the clips in the right order was hard enough, let alone editing!
However, this was an enjoyable and new experience which plays an important role in our coursework.

There is the build up to the opening of the car door. The door is hidden by dust this is the good technique used that creates suspense because of the anticipation of not knowing who is going to come out of the car.
The Cohen brothers create tension as well as suspense in the beginning of the movie.
The man in the foreground is on the phone but the camera zooms in to focus on the killer. This creates suspense because we know the killer is there but the other character does not know.
The delayed chase sequence and close timing before the man shoots the dog. This creates suspense because it drags and we do not know if the man is going to bee killed by the dog or the men chasing after him.
Parallel editing – showing events in two locations both reaching for same point. This creates tension because we as the viewer want to know what is happening in both parts and it makes us anxious to find out what going to happen next.
The tracking device – when the red light is blinking it means that the killer is coming. This makes us scared for the character and makes us feel involved with the movie.
The mysterious and unexpected plot is always going to keep the audience in suspense and it did. I was so keen on finding out what happens at the end because the film was as if was a cat and mouse chase and the story could change at any minute. This is what kept viewers in suspense.
Suspense creates an atmosphere whilst watching a movie. It motivates the viewer in wanting to know what is going to happen next. Therefore, in other words it keeps the viewer watch the movie.Suspense builds up tension. With suspense, there is always a twist to the story. This makes in more interesting. You just do not know what is going to happen next. Suspense also creates doubtfulness. This makes the viewer unsure and uncertain. Suspense is also very anticipating. In addition, a situation built up from suspense is quiet mysterious, which makes it exciting.
